J.L. Tyrrell is a literary novelist, fifth-generation Texan, longtime educator, and doctoral candidate. His work is rooted in family history, place, and the ways the past stays present.
He writes novels, short stories, poetry, plays, screenplays, nonfiction books, and nonfiction articles. His fiction draws from family history in Appalachian coal country. His landscapes range from Appalachian hollers to Colorado mining country and South Texas.
His work considers generational trauma, acknowledging versus concealing painful history, violence and mercy, moral injury, grief, faith and doubt, and labor. Military references remain minimal and generic.
